How Effective is Your Email?

Is your email getting delivered to your list ? If so, how many are opening the email? How many of your messages are "undeliverable" because of a bad email address? And how do you find out what these and other metrics are?

In order to test the effectiveness of an email campaign, you need to use HTML email, and a decent email deployment system that can deliver advanced metrics. Using simple templates and an application like DreamWeaver is recommended to cut down on unnecessary amounts of code.

Here are some important metrics:

Emails sent: this is the total number of active emails on the list

Undeliverable: these email addresses bounced (hard or soft) or had not completed the newly implemented AOL double opt-in process. If you keep your list fresh you should expect less than 5% of the list to be undeliverable.

Opens: You'll find there is a bit of a curve after you send an email, generally something like this:
Within 6 hours, 11% open the email.
Within 12 hours, 12% open the email.
Within 24 hours, 14% open the email.

Clicks: A decent click-through rate will vary depending on the nature of the email or offer, but most clicks will occur within the first 6 hours.

Lessons
1. Not everyone on the list receives the email.
2. Not everyone who receives the email opens it.
3. Not everyone who opens your email takes action - even if the action involves a complimentary gift.
4. You don't know anything for certain unless you track it. (so don't go by gut feel)
5. You must continue to track results over a period of time in order to see trends; what's working and what's not

Writing Effective E-Newsletters

Decent E-newsletters are becoming a rarity. All too often, companies and organizations are creating 'newsletters' for people to subscribe to, which are nothing more than facades for additional promotions and ads. People are becoming far less tolerant of this deceitful practice, and it's therefore becoming harder to build and sustain a decent subscriber base.

How to Build a Subscriber Database

Developing an opt-in list is done by compiling email addresses of recipients; each having given you permission to email them with information that pertains to what they opted to receive. This basically allows you to create your own list of "hot" prospects to email to over and over again!

How to Grow Your Opt-In List - Part 2

So by now you've realized the benefits of having an email opt-in list. You can increase the ROI of your emarketing initiatives, reduce customer acquisition and marketing costs, and increase customer participation/retention rates.

But if you're starting from ground-zero, you need to know how to grow your database into a substantial subscriber base before it will provide any sort of return. Here are a few effective methods to grow your opt-in list.

Effective Use of Autoresponders

An autoresponder is simply an email application that automatically sends a predefined email reply to anyone who emails to a particular address. For example, if you emailed ' This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ', you would get an autoresponse reply email stating that your email was received, and when to expect a reply. These have evolved into Email Service Providers.

You may find that using an autoresponder/ESP is useful for your online business. However, there are several types of autoresponders, so choosing the right autoresponder will depends on your business needs, as well as the type of email campaigns you will be implementing.
