How to create urgency with email subject lines

Excerpted from ConvUrgency.com's Smart Email Marketing Guide

One of the best tips I can give you for creating an enticing subject line is to create a sense of urgency. Use a deadline. Here are two examples:

  • [Company name] weekend clearance – 2 days only!
  • Limited-time offer for our subscribers – expires MM/DD/YY

People sometimes leave an email unopened in their inbox, thinking that they’ll get to it later. If it has no clear importance, they may never open it. When you establish a hard deadline, people are more likely to at least investigate what it is you’re offering, to see whether or not they need to take action lest they miss that deadline.

Of course, don’t lie to people. If you tell them it’s a limited time offer, and they open the email to find that the limit is the end of the year, then they won’t have that same sense of urgency the next time you email them!
